Golf Club News and Matches
We arrange a regular series of inter-club competitions and events throughout the year. Dates given below.
Sunday 4th August saw Budock Vean Golf Club hold its Annual Captains’ Charity Day in support of Cornwall Blood Bikes. 88 people played in the Better Ball competition, with a BMW motorbike, sponsored by the Ocean Group, as the main prize for any player achieving a 'Hole in One' on the 18th hole. Over £3,000 was taken on the day from golf entries, competitions and from the auction, hosted by members Mo and Martin Salome, with many local businesses and individuals donating the auction lots.
Although there was no 'Hole In One' achieved, there were some excellent scores and twelve 2’s recorded, with many of these on the 18th hole, the nearest being just 14 inches shy of winning the big prize. The winning score come from the local pair of Steve Penrose and Mike O’Hara, recording 49 points and beating runners up G Wall and K Van Reijn on 47 points, and M Ramsden and D Gudzij in third on 46 points. The best Ladies with a score of 44 points went to local pair Nina Hann and Lesley Upperton, and the best visitor prize went to Alex and Paul McHugh, also on 44 points. Other winners were K Bate and David Penrose, Mr and Mrs Trinklein and David Allen and Anneli Sweet, all on 44 points.
Sunday 1st September: Our Captain’s Day was held on Sunday 1st September with over 45 players, Men and Ladies, competing for the main prizes, provided by Captain James Greville-Smith. The overall winner, on count back, was David Penrose with an excellent 43 pts from Golf Manager Tony Ramsden. In third place, on 42 points, was Pam Schofield, Pam also took a share of the Ladies birdies and had a handicap cut of two shots. The prizes for best man, 41pts, and best lady, 38 pts, went to Mike O’Hara and Lesley Upperton, Lesley also picking up the Ladies Long Drive. The men’s Long Drive went to overall winner David Penrose while David Gudzij, David Kennedy and Tony Grace each won nearest the pin prizes.
