Captain's Report 2019

It has been real honour being the 2019 club captain. The year started with a dry drive in for once followed by a successful competition. If only my drive in off the first tee was as successful. The weather continued to be kind with very few winter competitions being cancelled. I’m sure this helped us in achieving the good entry levels we have seen in the competitions. The introduction of a Club Ryder Cup in the winter months was a huge success with positive feedback from all the players. The Red team lead by our vice-captain Kevin Bate were the overall winners with the Blue team lead by myself just behind by 1 point.

The club charity of the year was Cornwall Blood Bikes, and at the AGM a cheque was presented to Jayne and John Penlerick of Cornwall Blood Bikes….. the final total was £5557.00! A REALLY FANTASTIC AMOUNT Thank you to everyone again for such enthusiastic and generous support throughout the year!

The ‘all club’ competition and BBQ was another great day this year with the ever growing numbers of our junior section. This has proven to be a great day for them to experience a competition with all the other sections of the club. I would like to thank Piran for all his hard work in leading the junior section and Jamie O’Hara for his coaching. Also to those members who have given up their time to help and support our youngsters. Our junior development is essential in ensuring a strong future for our club.

The Presidents Putter in June was a well supported competition, on behalf of myself and the club I would like to thank John Craig for all his enthusiasm and dedication to the club over the past 2 years in this role.
Charity Day 2019 was in aid of Cornwall Blood Bikes. We had an amazing turn out of entries and a considerable amount of money raised. This day is not possible without everybody’s hard efforts and involvement so thank you all. From the ladies section arranging the meet and greet to Martin and Mo for running their signature auction. Although there was no winner for the BMW bike the day was a huge success.
This year has seen some great golf played at the club in particular the white side rose bowl, which went down to the last monthly medal to decide the winner between David Gudzij and Richard Hill. Congratulations Richard Hill on winning. Despite the wet weather in the past month we have had an exciting end to the year with our Cornwall Bowl team progressing into the quarter finals which will be held in the New Year. Good luck to our Wills and Bowl teams as they prepare over Christmas to take on our nearest rivals Falmouth in the next rounds.

During the year we have seen a good rise in membership, with various options to attract new players. Many have also commented how welcoming the club has been and what great condition the course is kept. This leads me on to thanking Tony and Warren for all their hard efforts in maintaining the course.

Off the course we have seen the redevelopment of our club bar/lounge area which I think you will all agree is a now a fantastic space and a great facility for our members. Thank you to Martin Barlow, family and hotel staff for always supporting the club and accommodating us in the hotel whilst the refurbishments took place. Thanks goes to Pam, Alan and Tony for always providing a warm welcome.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committee members for their help and supporting me throughout the year in various ways. Thank you to Dennis who originally was stepping down last year but remained in his role as secretary for the first half of the year your support and knowledge has been invaluable. Thank you to Brian Hoskins for continuing this role. I have received a large amount of support at various club events throughout the year from this year’s ladies captain Nicky Flett for this I can’t thank you enough.

As we move into 2020 I will continue to offer my support and urge members wherever possible to support the committee and next year’s captain on and off the course. The job of captaining the club next year will be taken up by Kevin Bate. He has proven himself to be a great vice-captain the club will be in safe hands with him at the helm for 2020. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to be your captain once again thank you all for your support.
