Wildlife Watch: Summertime on the Helford

Summer is a truly enchanting time here in Cornwall. While the county’s dramatic coastlines often steal the spotlight, the Helford River offers a softer, more secretive kind of magic. A winding network of ancient oak woodlands, wildflower-edged creeks and peaceful, meandering waterways, the Helford is a haven for wildlife – and a joy to explore by boat.

Thanks to our wonderful river boat partners at Helford River Cruises, we’ve had some spectacular wildlife sightings in recent months. Whether you’re drifting past dappled woodland or watching the tide shift in a quiet inlet, keep your eyes peeled – the Helford is teeming with life, particularly in the golden days of summer.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s been spotted on the water lately:

Grey Herons

With their statuesque stance and wide, leisurely wingspan (which can stretch to an impressive 195cm), grey herons are among the river’s most majestic residents. You’ll often see them stalking the shallows in search of a meal, their long legs navigating the mudflats with careful precision. Look out for them especially around Polwheveral Creek – but do keep a respectful distance, especially during nesting season.

Little Egrets

These elegant, snow-white birds are impossible to miss as they move gracefully through the shallows or take flight across the tree canopy. Since they first arrived in Cornwall in the late 1980s, little egrets have become a familiar – and much-loved – feature of the Helford landscape. Their presence adds a certain lightness and brilliance to the river, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon light.

Kingfishers

Catching sight of a kingfisher is one of summer’s rarest treats – a flash of electric blue skimming just above the water. These secretive little birds tend to keep a low profile during spring and early summer as they nest quietly along the riverbanks, but patient watchers may be rewarded with a brief, dazzling appearance. By autumn, sightings become a little more frequent.

Cormorants & Shags

Often mistaken for each other, cormorants and shags are both superb divers and a common sight around the Helford’s sheltered bays. You’ll often spot them perched on buoys or rocks with wings outstretched to dry – a classic pose after a successful underwater hunt.

Curlews

The haunting, fluting call of a curlew is one of the most evocative sounds of the Helford. These elegant waders are perfectly camouflaged against the mudflats and marshes, with mottled feathers and distinctive long, curved beaks. Listen carefully on quiet mornings – their song is a truly special part of this place.

Common Seals

Although not year-round residents, common seals do make regular visits to the Helford during the warmer months. Curious and playful, they’re often spotted following fishing boats or surfacing in quiet creeks. Keep your camera ready – they’re known for popping up when you least expect it.

Dolphins

On rare but magical occasions, dolphins have been seen just off Trebah Beach and near the entrance to Frenchman’s Creek. One guest once mistook a distant fin for a shark – but rest assured, no sharks here! Just these extraordinary marine mammals, whose intelligence and grace always leave a lasting impression.

Osprey

While they tend to pass through later in the year, usually around September or October, ospreys deserve a mention. These impressive birds of prey are a thrilling sight as they hover and dive over the river in search of fish. Definitely something to look forward to as the seasons change.
