Bunkers, Backswings & Birdies: Behind the Scenes with Budock Vean’s Golf Manager
At Budock Vean Hotel & Spa, golf is woven into the fabric of our guest experience – a peaceful pursuit set against the stunning backdrop of the Helford River. Nestled in one of Cornwall’s most scenic locations, our golf course offers guests a tranquil yet challenging experience, rich with history and natural beauty. We caught up with our Golf Manager, Tony, to gain some insight into what goes into managing our course and what makes it such a special place to play.
What does a typical day look like as golf manager?
I manage the golf shop, bar and golf course so I get to work in each department depending on demand each day. I greatly enjoy serving guests and members in the shop and bar and also enjoy working out on the golf course, helping to keep it in the best condition possible for guests and members to play on.
Can you tell us a bit more about the history of the golf course at Budock Vean Hotel?
Budock Vean is one of over 250 courses designed by James Braid in the mid to late 1920s and was originally designed to be an 18-hole course – the original drawings can be found in the golf bar. James Braid designed courses also allow its members to play other Braid designed courses at a discounted green fee rate!
What makes the golf course at Budock Vean unique compared to other courses in Cornwall?
Its location and design! The location of Budock Vean Golf Course set close to the Helford River makes it a idyllic course to play. It is well protected from the wind and the undulations make it playable all year round.
How do you ensure that the course remains in top condition throughout the year?
The weather dictates to a certain extent but we are always working hard and looking to make improvements to the course.
What are some of the standout features of the course that golfers should look out for?
The course has the second longest par 5 in Cornwall and the 5th hole is a very challenging par 4 for the men, with a lovely par 3 finishing hole known as The Flower Bowl.
What’s the best time of year to play golf at Budock Vean, and why?
The course is usually at its best between April and October when the weather improves and we are able to get it looking and playing at its best.
Who is your golf role model and why?
Jack Nicholas (nickname the Golden Bear) has won more major golf tournaments than any other golfer, and his record is unlikely to ever be beaten!
What is your favourite part about playing golf?
Every round is different, and every golf course sets a new challenge! New friendships are made wherever you travel too.
Whether you’re a confident golfer with some experience or a returning player looking to sharpen your skills, Budock Vean Hotel & Spa offers something special for everyone who steps onto the course. We invite you to relax, play, and connect with nature. We look forward to welcoming you for your next round.
