General Manager

About Darryl

When he’s not singing with his local choir or exploring Cornwall’s coastline on his electric bike, Darryl leads Budock Vean Hotel & Spa as General Manager. He brings a genuine passion for people and place, along with a commitment to creating memorable guest experiences. With a deep appreciation for the hotel’s tranquil setting and strong sense of community, Darryl helps shape the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes every stay feel special. Get to know him better below.

What is your favourite thing about being General Manager at Budock Vean Hotel & Spa?
The people – both the team and our wonderful guests – and of course, the hotel’s extensive grounds. There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating a place where guests can truly relax, switch off from the outside world, and soak up the peace and beauty around them. No traffic noise, just birdsong, beautiful woodland, and a winding path that leads right down to the Helford River. It’s quite an address to have on such a special peninsula. I also love the hotel’s magnificent long drive, lined with sub-tropical plants the whole way – it makes every arrival feel special. The early morning golfers and birdsong add to the magic. Seeing the hotel thrive, while playing a part in someone’s special stay, is what keeps this role exciting every single day.

When not at Budock Vean Hotel & Spa, you’ll find Darryl…
…enjoying a quiet pint in one of Cornwall’s tucked-away pubs, or taking a sea dip followed by a sauna – usually at nearby Gyllyngvase or Swanpool Beach, close to where I live. I also love zipping around the area on my electric bike, especially heading up to Pendennis Point to watch the activity on the water – the cruise ships passing through Falmouth Bay have become quite a sight in recent years.

Any hobbies outside of Budock Vean Hotel & Spa?
I have a real passion for singing and am currently a proud member of one of Cornwall’s largest and oldest male voice choirs – the Nankersey Male Choir – as well as a smaller group made up mainly of ex-local sportsmen called Eight in a Bar!

Your favourite place in Cornwall?
I love hopping on a boat to St Mawes – it always feels like a mini holiday. But I also enjoy a good stroll (and a pint!) in Porthleven – it’s full of character and has some great spots to stop and take it all in.

Assistant Reception Manager

About Wendel
Wendel Prinn has been an integral part of the Budock Vean Hotel team since 2009, bringing dedication and a warm presence to her role as Assistant Reception Manager. Peanut (my dog) and Netflix.

Being close to nature.

What do you think is the key to providing exceptional customer service?
Putting myself in the customer’s shoes—empathy is essential, and it all starts there.

What is a hobby or passion of yours that you believe positively impacts your role as a Receptionist?
My passion for acting from school. The reception counter is my stage where I strive to give my best, no matter the situation.

What advice would you give to someone interested in working at Budock Vean Hotel?
Jump on board!

We have a big fancy dress Christmas Party each year for our employees to relax and unwind. What has been your favourite fancy dress outfit that you have worn?
Without a doubt, Avatar.

If you could swap jobs with someone else in the hotel for a day, who would it be and why?
I’d love to swap with the Managing Director—imagine what it would be like to run the show!

Head Gardener

About Phil
With acres of natural beauty to care for, Phil is in charge of maintaining the wild, peaceful charm of Budock Vean’s gardens. From the vibrant display pots bursting into bloom in summer to the quiet magic of hidden woodland walks, Phil knows every corner of the grounds – and the hard work it takes to keep them looking their best. Get to know him better below.

What is your favourite part of the garden?
All depends on the time of year, the valley is a beautiful place to be during April and May with all of the different colours on show but the foreshore on a nice summers day is hard to beat.

When not at Budock Vean Hotel & Spa, you’ll find Phil…
When I'm not working I'm either in the sea freediving and snorkelling or fishing from one of the local beaches. At weekends, I like to explore National Trust gardens getting inspiration with my two daughters.

Best hidden gem in Cornwall in your opinion?
Land's End has some beautiful quiet little beaches if you're happy to do a little walking to find them.

Your favourite holiday destination
I don't get to go on holiday very often but my parents live in the south west of France so do get to go there and explore that part of the world.

Spa Therapist

About Bronwyn
Bronwyn's dedication and passion for wellness have been instrumental in shaping the exceptional spa experience we offer. Get to know more about her below.

What is your favourite thing about being a Spa Therapist at Budock Vean Hotel?
The spa’s tranquil and relaxing atmosphere makes each day a pleasure. Contributing to our guests' positive wellbeing is incredibly rewarding.

What is your favourite way to unwind after a busy day at work?
Going for a dip in the sea, listening to music, and enjoying a good stretch and breath session.

What is your favourite thing about living in Cornwall?
There are so many wonderful aspects! Being close to the ocean, enjoying the salty air, and experiencing the slower pace of life.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to pursue a career in hospitality?
Hospitality is about how we make people feel, not just what we do for them. It requires a genuine passion for people and their experiences.

What is your favourite treatment, and why do you love it?
Facials are my favourite because a gentle touch can greatly enhance someone’s wellbeing. The massage component helps alleviate stress and tension, creating a true sensory journey with various textures and scents.

Can you share a wellness tip or self-care ritual that you practice in daily life?
Be present in everything you do to appreciate life more and discover the small gems in everyday moments. And if you can, make time to journal!

If the spa team had a theme song, what would it be and why?
"Pure Shores" by All Saints. Its calming and serene melody instantly puts listeners at ease, creating a sense of escape and relaxation.

What advice would you give to someone interested in working at Budock Vean Hotel?
Budock Vean is set in a stunning location by the tranquil Helford River. Take time to appreciate the surroundings; it will help you make the best decision for yourself.

If you could swap jobs with someone else in the hotel for a day, who would it be and why?
I’d swap with the Head Gardener (only in the summer), to spend more time outdoors in the beautiful gardens!
