Budock Vean Golf Club – Players’ Guide & Safety Information

Welcome to Budock Vean Golf Club — a course renowned for its natural beauty, coastal setting, and friendly atmosphere.

This guide is designed to help you enjoy your round safely, responsibly, and respectfully towards other players, staff, and the environment.

General Conduct and Personal Responsibility

  • It is each player’s responsibility to ensure the safety of others and their belongings.
  • Always check surroundings before swinging to ensure no one is within range.
  • Never play a shot if there is any chance your ball may strike another person.
  • Call “FORE!” immediately if your ball is heading toward another person. If you hear “FORE,” crouch down and make yourself as small as possible.
  • Treat staff, fellow golfers, and wildlife with courtesy and respect

Arrival, Parking & Mobile Phones

  • Drive slowly when entering or leaving the club.
  • Keep left at the roundabout in front of the hotel.
  • Park only in designated areas and be aware of speed bumps.
  • Please keep mobile phones on silent during play; use is permitted only in an emergency.

Course Safety and Etiquette

Slopes, Banks & Tree Roots

  • Take care on slopes, banks, and uneven ground—especially in wet or frosty conditions.
  • Be cautious around tree roots or stumps; take relief where necessary under the Rules of Golf or local rules.

Bunkers & Bells

  • Enter and exit bunkers carefully.
  • On holes 2/11 and 4/13, wait for the bell to sound before hitting toward the green.

Greenkeeping Staff

  • Greenkeeping staff have priority at all times.
  • Do not play when staff are within range; wait until they signal or the way is clear.

Public Rights of Way

  • Certain holes share paths with the public. Walkers have priority—never play when people are within range.

Wildlife & Natural Hazards

  • The course is home to wildlife. Be alert for rabbit holes, burrows, uneven ground, wasps, bees, and biting insects.
  • Respect the environment and local boundaries.

Adverse Weather & Course Closure

Weather Warnings

Horn Signals:

  • One long blast: Dangerous situation (lightning or fog). Play must stop immediately.
  • Three short blasts: Temporary suspension (heavy rain, darkness, or strong winds). You may finish the current hole, then return to the clubhouse.
  • Two short blasts: Resumption of play.

Lightning Safety

  • Do not shelter under trees or on high ground.
  • Crouch low in a bunker or hollow.
  • Leave clubs and equipment where they are.
  • Do not use umbrellas or mobile phones.
  • Continuing to play during adverse weather is at your own risk.

Course Closure

The Golf Course Manager, Greenkeeper, Golf Team, or Hotel Management may close the course during unsafe conditions (flooding, frost, snow, high winds, fallen trees, etc.).
Please respect all closure notices.

Golf Buggies

  • Buggies are available for hire from the Golf Shop.
  • Personal buggies require prior approval from the Hotel Manager.
  • All buggy users must operate in line with the Golf Buggy Safety Policy.
  • Please drive responsibly and follow signage at all times.

  • Only two persons to ride on a two person vehicle and only two golf bags to be carried
  • To be used only by persons over 17 with a minimum of a CBT licence
  • Buggies must be kept on the buggy paths whenever possible
  • This buggy is low geared for your comfort and safety. Drive carefully at all times using both accelerator and brake simultaneously for extra control on down slopes
  • Always apply the brake when leaving the buggy
  • Only competent drivers should drive the buggy
  • Be aware and courteous of other golfers at all times
  • Do not attempt to drive the buggy up steep banks, including those leading to tees and greens

Health, Safety & First Aid

  • Golf is an outdoor sport with inherent risks—please take care at all times.
  • Report all accidents or incidents to a member of the Golf Team so documentation can be completed.
  • First Aid boxes are located in:
    Reception · Golf Shop · Greenkeepers’ Area · Gardens · Housekeeping · Kitchen · Maintenance · Spa.

Practising

  • Practice is limited to the nets and putting green only.
  • No practising is permitted on the course except under instruction from a PGA Professional.

Chemicals & Fertilisers

  • When course treatments are in progress, notices will be displayed at the 1st tee.
  • Avoid licking fingers or golf balls and wash hands after play.

Footwear & Dress Code

  • Golf shoes must be worn for safety and performance.
  • Please observe the club’s dress standards at all times.

Insurance

  • Budock Vean Golf Club provides liability insurance for members.
  • Hotel residents are covered under the hotel’s policy.
  • All players are encouraged to maintain personal golf insurance.

Deposit

For hotel residents and non-members full prepayment is required.

Cancellations

As a courtesy to other guests, we ask that you provide 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice you will be charged the full.
